Player Nickname: Talvienne
Name: Kaelyn
Codename: TBD
Age: 25
Date of Birth: March 15 2000
Height: 5’4”
Weight: 120lbs
Hair Color: Red
Eye Color: Milky, flecks of blue still remain, with a great deal of chemical scaring
Place of Origin: Salem
Nationality/Race: Caucasian
Classification/Origin of Powers: Mutant
Status: Trainee
Occupation: Trainee/Student (before Salem thief/street rat)
Personality Profile: trust no one but the dead, they’re the only ones with nothing left to loose. Even then it can be iffy. Use whatever you have at your disposal. Never show your entire hand. Keep them guessing. Let them underestimate you. Ruthless on the inside, but pitiful and pity worthy on the outside.
Physical Description: Tiny from a great deal of being underfed or starved in formative years and the last of year teenage years when she should have been doing most of her growing. Small because food is hard to come by without stealing it. Even then you have to be careful it doesn’t make you sick and sometimes it just does. Red hair that, unfortunately for her, can stand out if she’s not careful. It is kept perpetually in either a bun or a braid out of sheer necessity. Hard to do much with it when you can’t afford a hair cut or to go anywhere to wash it. Better to keep it up and out of the way. There’s not much left to her eyes, she burned away her sight with chemicals, leaving them mostly a milky colour with a few small flecks of blue left to show what colour they might have once been. Several chemical burns around the area of her eyes show what did the damage. The scars are quite old at this point; by over a decade.
General Power Information: She can see and interact with the world of the dead. Blinding herself only made this ability stronger. She has no fear of the dead anymore either, she’s been seeing them since birth and no longer sees any reason to fear them. Including Death themselves. Death is the person who comes to usher you on when your time is up after all, not the one who hurt you or killed you, so why does everyone freak out? Or so she thinks.
Ability One: The ability to both see and speak with the dead and the world of the dead. The fact that she is blind to the world of the living only makes this ability stronger as there is no other visual stimuli to get in the way of what she’s seeing.
Ability Two: To reach through to the world of the dead and even to step through for short period’s of time. (Eventually with the second half. I would like this to be something she trains to do while at Cobalt. It is a recent discovery that she has the capability and, of course, it’s frightening. Being able to shift to another plain of reality and not knowing if you can get back would scare anybody no matter how jaded I think. So as of right now, going completely over, isn’t something she can do. Yet.)
Ability Three: Immunity to possession and mind control. Also part of her mutation but given a good workout from a young age. Due to being drugged, medicated, and given treatment after treatment for conditions she did not have, she’s developed a very, very, solid sense of being in her own body and her surroundings. This also applies to how she is able to drag her own body into the deadlands, but is also one of the reasons why other spirits and such aren’t able to take her over. She’s just too aware of them.
I would like for part of this to eventually be the ability to knock a person’s soul out of their body with a hard strike. Her sense of self is so strong she can even tell where her own soul ends and another begins, thus being able to knock them out. It would be a temporary thing, just enough to scare them really, just enough for her to see them for a moment; but I think it would be enough to scare anybody really.
Drawbacks & Weaknesses: As stated above she is completely blind to the world of the living. Without assistance of Skulk or others she’d need more assistance than what she seems to currently need. Staying in the deadlands for too long risks getting lost, especially without Skulk’s assistance. Being blind to the real world means she would have no idea at all where she would be stepping out again as well. She’d be, very literally, lost without Skulk at that point.
Being able to see and hear the ghosts and spirits has made her a bit of a beacon for them since she was young. Mostly just the desperate wanting anybody to be able to hear them in the world of the living again. Others wanting her to do things for them thinking it will help them move on. Others with more nefarious intentions of course. She’s learned to tune most of them out, she’s learned to intimidate some of them into going away, and frankly Skulk scares the hell out of most of them so they leave her alone.
Unfortunately having gone blind at the age she did, and not being allowed to do much afterwards, she never really got a chance to learn braille either. She really misses being able to read.
Skills: Blindfighting – Skulk taught he to defend herself because being blind doesn’t mean she can’t fight back if she’s attacked. More so it’s even more of a reason to learn to fight back. She has the knife and she knows how to use it. She also knows how to hang onto it so nobody is going to take it from her willingly. She won’t be disarmed easily.
Lockpicking – How else is she supposed to steal bread from the bakery at 2am? Skulk taught her the basics and being able to hear the click clack of the locks and not be distracted by the sights of anything around her has been a bonus. The downside is that all of Skulk’s knowledge is quite out of date. So if the lock is updated to a techy password or fingerprint lock and not a lock and key lock ... better to just smash it. She won’t know what to do with it.
Pickpocketing – Come on! Who’s going to suspect the poor, underfed, little blind girl? Scrawny fingers make for light fingers. She looks younger than she is because of being underfed and she’s become an expert at the pitiful act, at apologizing, and at drawing just the right kind of attention to make a potential mark want to get away as fast as they can while she holds onto their valuables or money. She’s learned to use her so-called disability to her advantage.
Languages – any language Skulk knows he has taught her. Her dialect is probably out of date and her accent a little, ok a lot, odd, but she does understand and can speak them.
Sailing Knowledge – plenty of sailing knowledge, but no actual experience. She can tell you anything you want to do about a ship, especially old sailing vessels, but put her on one and all she can really do is sit there and enjoy the salt air on her face. Ok and she’s a damn good expert at tying a knot at this point too.
Background: Born to loving middle class parents who would have given her the world Kaelyn should have been a typical girl growing up in a typical suburban neighbourhood; and she would have been. If not for the fact that she could hear and see the dead from the time she was born. Not that her parents had any clue what was going on with their child. Once she was old enough to start talking to invisible friends of course the visits to child psychologists started. After that it was medications, after that it was hospitals, after that it was treatments, then more doctors, and more meds, and different doctors and different hospitals, and stronger meds. Until she was about twelve and she just snapped. She was on so many different medications, had been through so many different treatments of varying kinds, and varying levels of pain, that she had a moment of what she viewed as clarity. If she couldn’t see these things anymore then it would all stop. The nurse who left the cabinet with the chemical cleaners unlocked that night was promptly fired. Kaelyn used every last one she could get her hands on before they caught her to pour into her eyes to try to make it all stop. Unfortunately for her it didn’t stop anything, it just made it worse. It made her blind, she lost her eyesight, but it only stopped her from seeing the land of the living, it made all the “hallucinations” (as her parents, doctors, etc. Called them) the only thing she could see from then on in.
The other issue, that they were all unaware of, is that one of her doctors, one of her first, was a mob contact who was paid to inform them of any potentially useful mutant coming through that they might want to keep an eye on. Kaelyn was too young to be useful at the time so they left her to grow up a bit with her parents before collecting her. Then she went and blinded herself. So they had enough waiting. They gave her time to heal physically, making her about 14, when they decided enough was enough, when they came for her. The ghost friends she’d made by this point warned her what was coming and helped her to escape the house, keeping away from where the men looking for her were so she could keep away from them and out of sight. Her parents, however, were not as lucky, and both died that night. She’s been on her own and on the streets trying to keep away from them ever since.
She was around sixteen when she saw a ghost hoovering around his corpse in a great state of agitation. She didn’t care, she just wondered if all that agitation meant he had something valuable on him. So she searched him. And that is when she found Skulk’s knife and became his new bearer.
((This is where Kaelyn and Skulk’s background’s will merge, so see Shock’s stuff for extra.))
From there they have been inseparable. Mostly because Skulk literally can’t leave her, but also because she has grown to see him as a protective older brother that she doesn’t want to lose. She can’t lose the dagger unless she purposefully gives it up or she dies. She has already informed Skulk that if he ever sees her handing it over, even if she speaks the words that she is willingly giving it up in some way, he is to understand that she is lying, that it is a ruse for the sake of her safety or his, and that she will never, ever, in her life willingly give up him or the dagger. She’s done all she can to try to keep him safe in this way.
He has done all he can to keep her safe, teaching her how to blind fight, to pick pocket, to lock pick, to speak any language he knows how to teach, and to just generally watch over her and keep her away from the mob. Indeed the mob is still out there looking for her. They’ve even closed in a time or two but with Skulk and Kaelyn working together they’ve always managed to get away again. Unfortunately Kaelyn with her red hair and scarred eyes is rather distinctive.
After a few years of dodging the mob over and over, not to mention most of their men coming back to them sliced up, dead, or even in pieces, the mob decided Kaelyn simply wasn’t worth the trouble and sold her contract to META. Now it’s not the mob, it’s META who are after her, and that is an entirely different beast. Upon seeing the change of personal, the uniforms, the distinctly un-mob like behaviour and strategy, Skulk has urged Kaelyn, despite her misgivings and suspicious nature, to seek refuge at Cobalt for now. For her own safety.
Criminal Record: loitering charges, pick-pocketing charges (never actually convicted), theft charges, Break and Enter, and Assault and Battery charges.
Quirks, Extras, Random Character Facts: Has picked up a bit of Skulk’s old piratey accent. Even when speaking other languages the dialect is out of date and odd even to native speakers who can understand her perfectly. Example: Japanese speakers would likely say her speech is highly formal and more like one of the long ago eras.
Will never take the dagger off. Ever. Does not let it away from her ever. She will not be parted from it for anything.
